Can i use joist hangers for stair stringers. Currently installing pressure treated stair stringers and from past experience metal hangers have been used to fasten the stringers to the support joistbeam. Stringers used in flooring are not the same as stringers used in stairs. They are perpendicular to the stairs.
Several companies make adjustable slope hangers for both dimension and engineered wood products that make these connections easy to install and provide reliable capacity. Install blocking between internal stringers and use option metal strapping if you are wish. Now can you detail a guard rail post placed mid-stringer.
But then why would you put it there. In other words the ground-support should be directly supporting the stringer and the joists should be resting on the stringer- unless you will not be using the stringer to support anything significant. The stairs will hang here.
I have TJI or similar I Joists that are 11 78 with flanges that at 25 inches wide. The connection between stair stringer and deck comes down to a simple strap-style hanger but locating and properly securing that hanger is where the bulk of the work will be focused. Extend boards down from the back side of the rim joist.
I really like the addition of the Simpson hardware. Although they share a name and both offer support to a structure stair stringers have a distinctive difference. To ideally connect a header board to stringers you would screw into the joists.
